Who do you ask when you are the first?
A leader whose family has run businesses this size hears the second version at dinner. Somebody who has held the seat tells them what the report left out, at no cost to either of them.
A first-generation leader has one source: the business itself. Every account of it arrives through the structure the account is about.
A second opinion depends on who you already know. It is not handed out evenly.
That is not a comment on ability. It is a comment on what is available to check an answer against.

What this actually buys you.
Not encouragement, and not a mentor. A second reading of the same facts, from somebody who gains nothing either way. Somebody who inherits a network is handed that for free. Without one, you have to build it deliberately, and this is what building it looks like.
Many of the people running infrastructure in Southern and East Africa are the first in their family to run a business this size. That is a fact about who holds these seats today, not a comment on how well they hold them.
Competence is rarely the constraint. Information is.
